I’ve sorta had this “photographer crush” on Esther Havens for a while. I’m constantly amazed by her work and a bit jealous that she gets to travel all over the world on assignment.  I’ve borrowed a blurb from her Facebook page to better describe what she does:

Esther Havens is a Humanitarian Photographer. She captures stories that transcend a person’s circumstances and reveal their true strength.
For many years she has focused on social-awareness campaigns with organizations such as charity: water, TOMS Shoes, Falling Whistles and Invisible Children. Her images posses deep meaning to compel thought and challenge action.

Funny thing is, there’s about one degree of separation between us. She is represented by the same group as one of my good friend’s fiance, Eric Anderson. My goal as a photographer is to not be her, but to strive to make a connection with my subjects/clients like she does with the people that she photographs. You can see it in their eyes. Esther also uses natural lighting, as well as, off camera lighting very well, which I too enjoy.   I think I’m going to start making more blog posts about the photographers that inspire me, whether it’s the way they’ve built their business or the way they photograph.

Here’s an inspiring video from her reunion with Jean Bosco.  Two years ago she met him as a charity: water well was being drilled in his village. I couldn’t help but smile the entire time I was watching it.
