This was one of the most fun engagement shoots I’ve photographed. We hopped around to a few different locations around Hoyt Arboretum in Washington Park (Portland, OR). They had me laughing so hard. Gotta love a client who knows jusssst when to be inappropriate- hah! Their chemistry is obvious, which made my job easy. Together they posses this confidence while also being humble and serving (& funny). You can tell they’re great parents. They’re blending their families as one when they get married in August 2017.  We wrapped the session by opening a bottle of wine from their favorite local winery [Stoller] and photographed them enjoying it together.

Here are some of my favorites from their engagement session…

I’ve had the honor and privilege of photographing so many different people in this wonderful family this past year! What a blessing that I get to continually serve them by documenting such special celebrations or milestones. When Kiki & her mom asked me to photograph Kiki & Johnathan’s CELEBRATION OF LOVE at their home off Skyline Blvd, it was an obvious YES.  Kiki & Johnathan are getting hitched in Mexico in December, but wanted to have a local celebration in Portland with family & friends. Man, do they know how to throw a party or what?!  Every little detail had special meaning. From the hand made ceramic shot (glasses) brought from Mexico by a guest, to the giant tequila barrels from brought in from their friend who owns Sandoval’s -who catered the [delicious!] Mexican food, to the handmade paper flowers from Mexico displayed in the gorgeous flower wall Kiki designed herself, to the song that Paco Padilla (a Mexican musician and family friend) performed for the happy couple, to the traditional Mexican cookies/desserts, and I could go on and on…  It was special to see it all come together and see how it really takes a village. How cool that they were able to bring in so many parts of Kiki’s Mexican heritage to make a meaningful celebration for Kiki & JB.

Kiki, her mom, and the teams at West Coast Productions & Zupan’s florals know how to tie it all together and create a visually stimulating event without over doing it. It was perfect and the light was lovely for the evening.

Kiki & Johnathan have become like friends. They’ve been a blessing to serve and work with!  Take a look at some of the photos from their CELEBRATION OF LOVE back in August.

I also secretly and spontaneously shot video during parts of the celebration, as well. I didn’t have my typical video equipment so, it’s not quite as “polished”, but it was in the moment which makes it even more artistic, right?   I surprised Kiki & JB at their order session with THIS video. The BEST compliment I can receive is making my clients cry. I got the best compliment TWICE over at each of the private order sessions I did for Kiki & JB, as well as, her mom and dad. Enjoy!

The weekend of Oct. 12 we celebrated my 10 year high school reunion in Katy, TX. Since I was the class president my name was still on the class savings account and folks started asking back in the Spring if we’d have a reunion. With the help of a reunion committee (folks I recruited from our class) and GradsReunite, we organized a Saturday of fun to celebrate 10 years! It’s crazy how time flies. We started the day with a family picnic at Smith Ranch. We wrangled our kids and tried to catch up between hamburgers & hot dog bites, the trailer ride around the petting zoo, a bounce house, playground, etc… We fed goats, sheep, ducks, pigs, donkeys, horses, geese, llamas(!!), etc…

It was so cool to see old classmates with spouses and children now. It was so hot and muggy while we were there. Everyone was trying to do the “hug but don’t touch” hug – hah. Poor Brady was soaked by the time we left.  His little curls were wet and he was going off a very short morning nap.  As most know, we have a very “gentle giant” golden retriever, George. He and Brady get along great, but for some reason, Brady is frightened by most other dogs (especially small black dogs) and pretty much most other animals besides squirrels and ducks. Probably because George is more human than dog. So… the petting zoo wasn’t as pleasurable as I’d hoped. I was really excited, but oh well. We’ll keep introducing him to animals, because he WILL learn to like them ;).

Saturday evening the adults got dressed up and headed to The Houston Texans Grille in City Centre in Houston. It was a good turn out – around 85 folks (our graduating class was 660 people – you’d be surprised how many live out of state now). We mingled over drinks and (good) food. There was a huge outdoor patio with comfy furniture and various sports on the TVs so the guys were happy. We watched a slideshow of old (scanned in film) photos from our glory days as I MC’d the event (didn’t realize that until I arrived- hah). It’s so funny/weird looking back on our adolescents. It feels like it was just yesterday, but simultaneously light years ago. I enjoy seeing the path that each of us have taken the past 10 years.  Man, it was great being a kid. I loved high school, but I’m blessed with the life I’m living now.

Below are some photos from the family picnic… and if you scroll even further down you’ll find some sweet photos from high school. 😉
